Memories with my host family
I went abroad for the first time in my life.
I was afraid that I might get homesick before going.
But thanks to my host family, I had a great time and felt no homesickness at all. Of course, I was quite puzzled by the difference between Japan and New Zealand in language and lifestyle. However, I got used to them gradually and my worries disappeared. My host family kept many animals, such as horses, sheep, dogs, cats.
My host father, Scott, was very kind, and he always drove me to school.
My host mother, Mindy, cooked delicious meals and did the laundry every day. My buddy, Connor, explained things to me using easy English when I had any questions or something I didn’t understand.
For example, when we went to school together, I couldn’t catch what other friends were talking about since they talked so fast. So I asked him what they were saying, and he told me carefully.
I played with Harrison a lot. Especially, I liked to play video games with him.
I don’t have a little brother, so he was adorable.
I went to see a rugby game with my host family. It was the first time for me to see the rugby game. It was very impressive and interesting. When we went to Hanmer Springs, we played in a hot spring pool. We slid many times with a water slider, and we had a wonderful time. Though it was cold in winter, it was a very good memory.
I rode a horse which they kept in the farm. It was my first full scale horse riding experience. At first, I was a bit scared, but I felt nice with riding a house around their house. My host mother said, “ Yamato is a natural.”
I wanted to give something back for such a nice host family. So I cooked fried rice for Connor when he was absent from school because of sickness. Even though the rice was different from Japan, I could cook nice fried rice. Connor was very glad to eat it. I was very lucky to meet such a nice host family. I want to go to see them in the future when my English gets better.

ホストファミリーとの思い出
ぼくは生まれて初めて海外に行きました。
行く前はホームシックになるかもしれないと心配でした。
でも楽しくてホームシックなんか全く感じませんでした。
それはぼくのホストファミリーのおかげです。
もちろん最初は言語や生活習慣の違いにかなり戸惑いました。
しかししだいに慣れて不安はなくなりました。
ぼくのホストファミリーの家には、たくさんの動物、馬、羊、犬、猫がいました。
そしてホストファーザーのスコットさんはとてもやさしくて、いつもぼくの送り迎えをしてくれました。ホストマザーのミンディさんは、毎日おいしい料理や洗濯をしてくれました。ぼくのバディのコナー君は、ぼくがわからないことがあったら、簡単な英語を使って説明してくれました。例えば、一緒に学校に行ったときに、他の友達が話す英語が速くて聞き取れないとき、コナー君に尋ねると丁寧に教えてくれました。弟のハリソン君とはたくさん一緒に遊びました。とくにテレビゲームで遊ぶのが楽しかったです。ぼくには弟がいないのでとてもかわいかったです。
ホストファミリーとは一緒にラグビーの試合に行きました。ぼくは初めてラグビーを見ました。とても迫力があっておもしろかったです。休みの日には、ハンマースプリングスにいって、一緒に温泉のプールで遊びました。ウォータースライダーで何度もすべって大はしゃぎしました。冬なので寒かったけど、とてもいい思い出になりました。それから家で飼っている馬にのせてもらいました。ぼくにとっては初めての本格的な乗馬体験でした。最初はちょっとこわかったけど、家の周りを馬に乗って散歩してすごく気持ちよかったです。ホストマザーから「上手だ」とほめられました。
ぼくはすてきなホストファミリーのために何かお返しをしようと思いました。そこでコナー君が体調をくずして学校を休んだ時に、チャーハンを作りました。日本とお米が違ったのでパラパラのおいしいチャーハンができました。コナー君はとても喜んでくれました。こんなすばらしいホストファミリーに出会えてとてもよかったです。いつかまた、もっと英語が上手になって会いに行きたいです。
