Impression when I stayed in Christchurch
I had two things I felt when I stayed in Christchurch.
One is the landform and streetscape of Christchurch. I saw an impressive scenery in front of my buddy’s house. It was a widespread sunrise on the horizon over land. I think “the widespread sunrise on the horizon over land” can rarely be seen in Japan. New Zealand is almost as large as Japan, but there is a lot of natural beauty of New Zealand different from Japan. The large mountain chain, limitless horizon and beautiful seaside surprised me. And I think the streetscape of Christchurch looks like one of Kurashiki. In Christchurch, modern art fits in old streetscape such as old castles. In this point, Christchurch is similar to Bikanchiku, Kurashiki. In Bikanchiku, there are many places attract young people to the town with remaining old streetscape. The old and modern scenes match well.
The other is that people in Christchurch are very kind. Buddy’s high school students and people in town, of course buddy and her family were very kind to me. What was particular impressive was an experience of high school life. In English conversation, I couldn’t understand English words, so the students spoke with easy words and with gestures. And other students said to me, “Please teach us Japanese words” acted like a fool, presented me with hand-made cookies. These acts eased my tensions.
In my experience of life in Christchurch, at first I was worried about English communication. But for two weeks my life in Christchurch filled with new discoveries and great surprises. I will make good use of this valuable experience for my future dream.
「Christchurch 生活体験通して感じたこと」
私がChristchurchの生活体験で感じたことは、２つあります。１つ目はChristchurchの地形と、街並みについてです。私はバディの家の前で見た、「地平線に広がる朝焼け」の景色が印象に残っています。「地平線に広がる朝焼け」は日本ではあまり見ることが出来ない景色だと思います。New Zealandと日本の国土面積は同じ位ですが、New Zealandは大きな山々やきれいな海を見る事が出来る海岸、そして、限りなく続く地平線を見る事が出来き、日本ではあまり見られない景色に感動しました。
また、Christchurchの中心部が少し倉敷市と似ているなと思いました。それは、Christchurchはお城などの昔の建物が残る街並みに近代的なアート作品が溶け込んでいました。これは、倉敷の美観地区と似ていると思います。美観地区も古い町並みを残しながらも若い人たちにも好まれるような工夫がたくさんあります。そのため、どちらの街並みも昔と今とがうまく溶け込んでいるという共通点があると思いました。
2つ目は、Christchurchの方々がとても優しいということです。私は、バディや、バディの家族はもちろん、バディの高校や街の方々も、髪の色や国籍も異なる私にとても優しくしてくれました。その中でも特にバディの高校で出会った生徒さん達は、私と会話をする中で私の知らない単語があると、その度にジェスチャーや簡単な単語に直して分かりやすいように言ってくださってほんとに優しい人達だなと思いました。他にも、日本語を教えほしいと声をかけてくれたり、一発芸を見せて笑わせてくれたり、手作りクッキーをプレゼントしてくれたりと多くの人の優しさに触れました。
Christchurchでの生活体験に行く前は、不安が大きかったですが、現地に行くと毎日が新しい発見や驚きであふれているとても楽しい２週間でした。この貴重な体験を、これからの将来の夢にも生かしていきたいと思います。
