「美しい街にひそむ学び」

この夏、私はカンザスシティでの生活体験に参加させていただき、忘れられない時間を過ごすことができました。出発前は憧れのアメリカの地へ行けることの楽しみな気持ちと同時に、慣れない生活や時差に適応できるだろうかという不安も抱えていました。けれども実際に現地へ到着すると、温かく迎えてくださった日米協会やホストファミリーの方々のおかげで、安心してこの姉妹都市交流活動のスタートを切ることができました。

最初の数日は時差ぼけや環境の変化で体調を整えるのに苦労しました。しかし、十分な休憩を取り、ホストファミリーにも相談したことで、少しずつ回復し、刺激的な毎日を楽しむ余裕が生まれました。日常のちょっとした会話や食事の時間、買い物や観光のときなど、どんな場面も私にとって新鮮で、学びの連続でした。

カンザスシティは噴水の多さやプラザに見られる西洋建築、ネルソン・アトキンス美術館やケンパー近代美術館など、街並みや景観が非常に美しく、また優しい人々に出会うことができました。街を歩けば多様な人種の人々が暮らしており、多文化共生社会の姿を肌で感じました。その一方で、一部の地域では人種によって住環境に違いがあり、セグリゲーションの問題がいまだに解決されていない現実に衝撃を受けました。しかし、それは多文化社会であるからこそ直面する課題でもあり、日本で生活しているだけでは気づけなかった視点を学ぶ機会になったと感じています。

今回の体験を通じて、異なる文化を尊重し、相手に理解を示すことの大切さを学びました。そして、今後も英語の学習に力を入れ、将来は日本語教師として、互いの文化を理解し合える橋渡し役になりたいという思いが強くなりました。最後に、このような貴重な機会を与えてくださった関係者の皆様や温かく迎えてくださったホストファミリーをはじめ、支えてくださった全ての方々に心から感謝申し上げます。今回の経験を糧に、これからも成長を続けていきたいです。

Discoveries in a Beautiful City

This summer, I took part in a sister city goodwill program between Kurashiki City and Kansas City, and it became an unforgettable experience. Before leaving Japan, I felt both excited about visiting the United States, a country I had always admired, and concerned of whether I would be able to adjust to an unfamiliar lifestyle and deal with jet lag. However, when I arrived, I was warmly welcomed by the Japan-America Society and my host family, which gave me the confidence to begin this sister city exchange program with peace of mind.

The first few days were tough as I struggled with jet lag and the unfamiliar surroundings. Yet, by resting enough and talking with my host family, I gradually recovered. Soon I felt comfortable and began to truly enjoy the stimulating days ahead.
 Every moment—from casual conversations at home and sharing meals, to shopping and sightseeing—was fresh and meaningful to me, and each situation gave new learning opportunities.

 Kansas City itself left a strong impression on me. I was amazed by the city’s beauty, from its many fountains and the Western-style architecture of the Country Club Plaza, to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. I also met many kind people along the way. As I walked through the city, I saw people from diverse backgrounds living together, which made me feel the presence of a multicultural society. At the same time, I also learned that in certain neighborhoods, living conditions still vary based　on race, and that issue of segregation has not been completely solved. This surprised me. However, I realized that this challenge is part of what makesKansas City a multicultural city. For me, it was a valuable chance to gain a perspective I would not have noticed if I had only stayed in Japan.

Finally, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who made this program possible—the officials of Kurashiki City and the Japan-America Society, my host family who welcomed me with warmth, and all those who supported me along the way. I will treasure this experience as a source of inspiration, and I am determined to continue growing from it.
