「カンザスシティへの訪問を終えて」

 高校2年生の夏、私は大きく成長できたと思う。初めて訪れたアメリカ、言葉の通じない異国の地で過ごした17日間は、国籍も年齢も背景も異なる人々と心を通わせる喜びを教えてくれた。特に印象に残っているのは、近所の人たちとのスモアパーティーだ。私は完全に部外者のはずなのに、みんなが笑顔で迎えてくれ、「どこから来たの？」「アメリカはどう？」と次々に声をかけてくれた。焼きマシュマロの甘い香り、夕暮れの涼しい風、輪になって話す人々の声。その場を包む温かさは、今でも鮮明に思い出せる。日常生活の中でも、ホストファミリーはいつも温かく接してくれ、緊張していた私を家族の一員のように迎えてくれた。そのおかげで滞在はさらに豊かで特別な時間となった。

この滞在で学んだのは、言葉以上に大切なのは「相手に興味を持つこと」と「気持ちを伝えようとすること」だということだ。カンザスの人たちは、私の拙い英語でも、表情やジェスチャー、そして会話を楽しむ姿勢でつながってくれた。英語は単なる教科ではなく、「世界中の人とつながるための鍵」だと強く感じた。国籍や文化が違っても、相手の気持ちを受け取ろうとする心があれば、言葉以上に豊かに人とつながれるのだと知った。

この経験を通して、私は「英語を使ってもっと広い世界とつながりたい」という思いを一層強くした。将来は必ず再び留学し、英語を通して国籍や文化の異なる人々と心からつながり、世界中に友達を作りたい。そして、その経験を生かして、自分自身の視野をさらに広げ、さまざまな価値観に触れながら成長していきたい。カンザスで過ごした日々は、私の中で一生の宝物であり、この夏、私は英語を通して世界とつながれる喜びを知ったのだ。

After my visit to Kansas City

In the summer of my second year of high school, I think I grew a lot. I spent 17 days in America, a country I visited for the first time. Even though I could not speak English well, I learned the joy of connecting with people who have different nationalities, ages, and backgrounds. One of the best memories was a s’mores party with the neighbors. Even though I was a stranger, everyone welcomed me with smiles and asked, “Where are you from?” and “How do you like America?” The sweet smell of roasted marshmallows, the cool evening breeze, and the voices of people talking in a circle made the place very warm. I can still remember it clearly. My host family also treated me kindly every day. They accepted me like a real family member, so my stay became even more special.

From this experience, I learned that more important than words are “showing interest in others” and “trying to share your feelings.” People in Kansas talked with me not only through English, but also with facial expressions, gestures, and smiles. I realized that English is not only a school subject, but also a “key to connect with people all over the world.” I found that even if we have different nationalities or cultures, we can connect if we try to understand each other.

Because of this experience, I want to use English to connect with the wider world. In the future, I want to study abroad again, make friends around the world, and learn more about different values. The days I spent in Kansas are my treasure, and this summer, I found the joy of connecting with the world through English.
