わたしの夏休み

私は姉妹都市訪問青少年生活体験を通して学んだことが2つあります。

1つ目は、文化の違いです。 アメリカと日本では文化に大きな違いが沢山あります。例えば、家の中に土足で入るのか。靴を脱いで入るのか。朝ごはんは何を食べるのが主流なのか。洗濯機は毎日回すのか。そのほかにも現地でしか学ぶことのできない文化について知ることが出来ました。私が特に驚いたのは、どこの店でも残した物を持って帰れるのが当たり前だということです。ホストファミリーと一緒にラーメン屋に行った時、ラーメンの残りを持って帰っている人が沢山いてすごく驚きました。日本とは違い、持ち帰りをすることで次の日のご飯などを作らなくて済むという考え方がとても良いなと思いました。

2つ目は、人の温かさです。 海外に行くことが初めてで緊張していた私に日米協会の方々やホストファミリーは暖かく笑顔で迎えてくださり、私の心の中にあった不安を消し去ってくれました。英語がまだまだ上手ではない私の言葉に耳を傾けてくれたり、わからない時は簡単に言い換えてくれたり向き合ってくれたのが嬉しかったです。引率の目黒さんは私たちの体調を毎日のように心配してくださり、ホストファミリーの期間でも電話で悩みなどを聞いてくださりとても安心して過ごせました。一緒に行った団員のみんなも乗り物酔いがしやすい私のことを気にかけてくれて、帰りの飛行機で体調が悪くなった時に助けてくれたのがこのメンバーで良かったなと思いました。

私はこの体験を通して他にも諦めない強さや、積極的に動く大切さについて感じることが出来ました。英語を学ぶために行った体験だったけど英語以外についても学べる機会の多い体験でした。私はこの体験を通して学んだことを自分の将来のための糧にしていきたいと思います。このメンバーで行くことが出来たこと、ホストファミリーに会うことが出来たこと、海外の友達が出来たこと、安全に帰って来れたこと、全てを奇跡だと思って大事にしていきたいと思います。

My treasure

This summer, I joined the Sister City Youth Exchange Program, and it became one of the most special experiences of my life. I found two treasures during this trip. The first treasure is learning about cultural differences. 

There are many small but interesting differences between life in America and Japan. For example, whether people take off their shoes in the house, what they eat for breakfast, or how often they do laundry. What surprised me most was that people often take leftovers home from restaurants. When I went to a ramen shop with my host family, they asked for a box to take the rest home, and I was shocked because in Japan we usually don’t do that. I realized that culture is something you can only truly understand by living in it, not just by reading about it.

The second treasure is the kindness of people. Since this was my first time going abroad, I was nervous. But my host family and the people from the Japan-America Society welcomed me with warm smiles, and that made me feel safe. My host family listened carefully to my poor English and tried to explain things in simple words when I didn’t understand. The leader, Mr.Meguro also cared about me every day and even checked on me by phone during my stay. Thanks to him, I could relax and enjoy my time.The friends who traveled with me also supported me. They helped me when my bag was too heavy and looked after me when I didn’t feel well on the plane . Because of them, I learned how important it is to help each other. I especially want to say thank you to my host families. They treated me like I was really part of their family. We shared meals, laughter, and many happy moments together. They encouraged me whenever I felt shy or nervous, and they made my stay unforgettable. I will always remember their kindness, and I want to give the same kindness to others in the future.

This summer gave me much more than just English practice. I found courage, friendships, and wonderful memories that I will never forget. Meeting my host families, spending time in America, and returning home safely, and being able to go with this group were all miracles to me. These are truly my treasure.
