カンザスシティで学んだこと

私は倉敷市の姉妹都市であるアメリカ・ミズーリ州カンザスシティで、17日間の留学を体験しました。海外での生活は初めてだったので、楽しみな気持ちと同じくらい不安や緊張もありました。

最初に強く感じたのは、「自分から話すこと」の大切さです。私は英語を完璧に話せるわけではないので、最初は相手の言葉を理解するだけで精一杯でした。でも、伝えたい気持ちを大切にして、勇気を出して自分の言葉で話してみると、ホストファミリーや現地の方々が一生懸命聞いてくれることに気づきました。その時、うまく話せるかどうかよりも伝えようとする気持ちが大切なんだと学びました。 間違えることを恐れずに、思い切って質問したり、違う言い方をしてみたりすることで、会話が続いていきました。簡単な言葉でも、何も言わないよりはずっといいということを実感しました。少しずつ自分から積極的に話せるようになり、気づけば自然と笑顔で会話を楽しめるようになっていました。

特に、ホストファミリーとの毎日の時間がとても印象に残っています。夕食の時に日本の学校生活について話したり、車での移動中に景色について話したりと、ちょっとした会話の一つ一つが心に残りました。自分から話しかけることで相手のことも知ることができ、気持ちが通じ合う瞬間がとても嬉しかったです。

この留学を通して、私は以前よりも積極的になれたと思います。英語力が少し伸びただけでなく、人と向き合うときに「自分の気持ちを伝えること」を大切にできるようになりました。この経験は今後の学校生活や将来にも必ず役立つと思います。 最後に、このような貴重な機会を与えてくださった関係者の方々や、温かく迎えてくださったホストファミリーに心から感謝しています。今回の学びをこれからの生活にも活かし、倉敷市とカンザスシティのつながりを大切にしながら、もっと成長していきたいです。

My Experience in Kansas City

I went on a 17-day short-term exchange program to Kansas City, Missouri, a sister city of Kurashiki. It was my first time traveling abroad, so I was excited but also a little nervous. Looking back, this experience taught me a lot about myself and the importance of trying new things.

During my stay, I lived with a host family. At first, I was shy and worried about speaking English. I often hesitated, afraid of making mistakes. But I quickly realized that it was more important to try communicating than to speak perfectly. When I spoke from my heart, my host family always listened and encouraged me. This made me feel more confident and willing to start conversations on my own. By the end of the program, I felt that I had become more proactive and less afraid to share my thoughts.

Living with my host family gave me many chances to see how people spend their daily lives, such as the way they eat meals, talk with each other, and spend time together. It was very interesting to notice the differences and similarities between Japan and America. I learned a lot about American culture.

What impressed me most was the warm connection with people. I enjoyed spending time with my host family and friends, sharing our cultures and teaching each other new things. These conversations made me realize that friendship can grow even if we come from different countries, and I was very happy to build such relationships.

Through this program, I feel that I have grown a lot. I became more confident, open-minded, and willing to take initiative in conversations. I also gained a deeper understanding of another culture and how people live differently yet share similar feelings and values. I am truly grateful to everyone who gave me this wonderful opportunity. I hope to continue using what I learned to connect with others, both in my community and internationally, and to keep building friendships between Kurashiki and Kansas City.
