学びと成長の17日間

私はカンザスシティで自分自身を成長させる多くのことを経験しました。その中でも特に印象に残っており、今後も大切にしていきたいことが二つあります。

一つ目は、自分から積極的に英語での会話をしていくことです。私は正直、カンザスシティに行く前までは、自分にはコミュニケーション能力があると思っており、カンザスシティで問題なく生活することができるという自信がありました。しかし、車の中や食事中での会話の中で上手く受け答えができず、苦労していました。そうすると次第に、自分の発言に自信がなくなり、自分から話すことができなくなりました。単語が正しいのか、間違った文法になっていないかなど考え込み、不安な気持ちになりました。それでもホストファミリーの方は話し続けてくれました。私は、自分の知っている単語で会話をつなげるのにとにかく必死でしたが、なんとか伝わりました。自分の言いたいことが相手に伝わったときはとにかく嬉しくて、達成感を感じました。それからは、カンザスシティでしたいことや感じたことなどを自分からホストファミリーの方へ言うことで、話せるということが楽しくなっていき、英会話が身についたという実感がありました。自分から相手に意見を伝えることの難しさと重要さを経験しました。

　二つ目は、文化の違いを受け入れ、尊重することです。私のホストファミリーはキリスト教徒の方で、食事の際にはお祈りを一緒にしました。最初、初めてお祈りする時は驚きが隠せずどのようにすればよいのか分からなかったのでうろたえていました。しかし、優しく手を差し伸べてくれて、同じように合わせてすることができました。また、教会にも連れて行ってくれました。そこでは、聖壇前で歌っている人や、ろうそくを持った人などがいて、見たことのない光景が広がっていました。私は教会にいた人たちの合唱にとても感動しました。合唱には深い絆でつながった歌声が協会内に響き渡り、力強さや団結力を感じました。

　これらの貴重な経験は、無力な自分だけでは実現させることはできませんでした。倉敷国際課様の支援のもと、安心感のあるたくましいリーダーや愉快で個性あふれる仲間たち、温かく見送ってくれた家族の支えがあったからこそできた体験です。このプロジェクトに関わってくださった皆様との出会いに感謝し、今回の17日間の経験を生かし、これからの未来に貢献できる人材になりたいと思います。

17 Days of Learning and Growth

I experienced many things in Kansas City that helped me grow as a person. Among them, there are two things that left a particularly strong impression on me and that I want to continue to cherish in the future.　The first is actively engaging in English conversations. To be honest, before going to Kansas City, I believed I had good communication skills and was confident I could live there without any issues. However, during conversations in the car or during meals, I struggled to respond appropriately. As a result, I gradually lost confidence in my own words and found it difficult to speak up. I became anxious, overthinking whether my words were correct or if my grammar was wrong. Despite this, my host family continued to talk to me. I desperately tried to connect the conversation using the words I knew and somehow managed to get my point across. When my thoughts were understood, I felt incredibly happy and a sense of accomplishment. From then on, I began to enjoy speaking English by actively sharing my thoughts and feelings with my host family and I felt that my English conversation skills were improving. I experienced both the difficulty and importance of expressing my opinions to others.

　The second thing is accepting and respecting cultural differences. My host family were Christian, and we prayed together before meals. At first, when I prayed for the first time, I was so surprised that I didn't know what to do and felt flustered. However, they kindly reached out their hands to me, and I was able to join in with them. They also took me to church. There I saw people singing in front of the altar and others holding candles and it was a scene I had never seen before. I was deeply moved by the choir at the church. The harmonious voices, connected by a deep bond, resonated throughout the church, giving me a sense of strength and unity.

These valuable experiences would not have been possible on my own. Thanks to the support of the Kurashiki International Office, I was able to have this experience with the help of a strong leader who made me feel at ease, cheerful and unique friends, and the support of my family who warmly saw me off. I am grateful for the opportunity to meet everyone involved in this project and hope to use the experiences from these 17 days to contribute to the future as a capable individual.
