Kurashiki sister city delegation program has been suspended due to the spread of the Covid-19, but it had been resumed for the first time in four years.
For 17 days from July 25th to August 10th, the seven high school students and I were able to have a wonderful experience in Kansas City.
It was the first time for most of the members to go abroad this time. Therefore, in leading the delegation, I wanted the members to be able to spend the time safely in Kansas City, and to voluntarily take on various challenges.
For that purpose, I would like to convey the anxiety or confusion and the joy of overcoming them, which I experienced when I was working as a JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteer in Morocco, and I worked to support the members so that they could spend a safe, fun and meaningful time.
However, it was not necessary for me to do anything. Not only during our stay in Kansas City, but also during the pre-departure training session and at the time of preparing the performances to be shown at the exchange party, the members cooperated and worked voluntarily. I received many word saying, "You are wonderful members. We are glad you are here." from the members of The Heart of America Japan-America Society and the host families. As a leader, I was very happy to receive words of praise and gratitude.
It was my first time to travel to the mainland United States, and I was able to learn a lot through this visit.Compared to other countries I have visited ever, I was amazed by its vastness, diversity and richness.
In Kurashiki, I usually work in the welfare department. With the cooperation of various people, I was able to observe the local welfare office and the activities of the churches that are making donations.There are few things that I can immediately apply to my usual job, but I would like to tell what I learned there to as many people as possible.
Finally, thanks to the people of The Heart of America Japan-America Society and the host families who prepared various programs for us, we could spend awesome days we will never forget.People from Kansas City are scheduled to visit Kurashiki next April as adult goodwill delegation to commemorate the 50th anniversary of our sister city relationship.
I'm looking forward to the day when I can welcome you at Kurashiki with all the student members. I really appreciate everyonewho has contributed in this mission.Thank you so much.
令和5年度姉妹都市訪問青少年生活体験団 感想文
新型コロナウイルス感染症拡大の影響で中止されていた姉妹都市訪問青少年生活体験団が４年ぶりに再開されました。令和５年７月２５日から８月１０日までの１７日間、７名の高校生の団員とともにカンザスシティ市で素晴らしい経験をさせて頂くことができました。今回、海外へ行くこと自体が初めての団員がほとんどだったということもあり、引率者としてカンザスシティを訪問するにあたって、団員のみなさんが現地で安全に過ごすとともに、自発的に様々なことに挑戦してもらいたいと考えていました。そのため、自分自身がJICA海外協力隊として北アフリカのモロッコで活動していた時に経験した不安や戸惑い、そしてそれらを乗り越えた時の喜びを伝えることで、団員たちが安全に楽しく有意義な時間を過ごすことができるようサポートすることに取り組みました。しかし、結果的には私が何かをするまでもなく、滞在中はもとより、出発前の事前研修会や現地で披露する出し物の準備をする段階から、団員同士で協力しながら自発的に取り組んでくれました。現地で手厚くサポートをして頂いた中部日米協会の方々、団員をご自宅に受け入れてくださったホストファミリーの皆様から、滞在中に幾度となく「素晴らしいメンバーです。来てくれて嬉しい。」と賞賛と感謝の言葉を頂き、引率者としてとても嬉しく思いました。
私個人としてもアメリカ本土への渡航は初めてで、今回の訪問を通して多くの学びを得ることができました。これまでに訪れた国と比較すると、その広大さや多様さ、そして豊かさに驚かされました。普段は福祉課で業務にあたっていますが、今回、様々な人のご協力を得て現地の福祉事務所や日頃からボランティアを行っている教会の活動を見学させて頂くことができました。すぐに業務に活かせることは少ないですが、現地で学んだことを一人でも多くの人に伝えていきたいと思います。
最後になりましたが、現地で様々なプログラムを用意してくださった中部日米協会の方々及びホストファミリーの皆様のおかげで、決して忘れることのできない充実した１７日間を送ることができました。来年4月には姉妹都市提携５０周年を記念した親善使節としてカンザスシティの皆様が倉敷に訪問される予定です。団員のみなさんと一緒に倉敷でお迎えできる日を楽しみにしています。今回のカンザスシティ訪問に際してご尽力いただいたすべての皆様に感謝申し上げます。
