ニュージーランドは冬だった

ニュージーランドは冬だった。
確かに知ってはいた事だった。南半球と北半球では季節が逆になる。だが、空港を出たとき出迎えてくれた異国の冬の風。それを頬に受けたときの衝撃を、私はきっと忘れない。

ホストファミリーはとても優しく、温かく迎えてくれた。はじめは英語がうまく出てこず、聞き取れないことも多かったが、ホストファミリーがゆっくり話してくれたり、翻訳機を使用してくれたりして、次第に会話もスムーズになっていった。特に印象に残っているのは、家族みんなで料理をしたことだ。一緒にラザニアを作りながら、お互いの食文化についてたくさん話すことができた。また、ホストファミリーと一緒に映画やドラマを観たり、バディと一緒にゲームをしたり
もした。

現地の中学校にも通い、同世代の生徒たちと一緒に授業を受けた。日本の中学校とは何もかもが違っていて、大変興味深かった。今回通ったのはカトリック系の学校で、授業の最初に祈りを捧げたり、全校集会で聖歌のようなものを歌ったりしていたのが特に印象に残っている。また、授業の受け方も異なっていて、一つのクラスでずっと授業を受けるのではなく、教科ごとに教室が細かく分かれており、休み時間ごとにそれぞれの教室に移動して授業を受けていた。生徒は一人ー
台、自分のノートパソコンを所持しており、それを使って時間割を確認したり、授業を受けたりしていた。紙の教科書はほとんど使われず、A4サイズのノートをパソコンと併用する授業も多かった。
 

休日にはホストファミリーと一緒にさまざまな場所へ出かけた。スキー場で犬ぞりを体験したり、動物園にも行ったりした。外食へ出かけたときはメニューが読みづらく苦戦したが、ホストファミリーが教えてくれたおかげでなんとか注文することができた。
二週間という短い期間ではあったが、言葉の壁を乗り越えて会話が成立したときの喜びや、異文化に触れる楽しさを学ぶことができた。この素晴らしい経験を通して、もっと英語を話せるようになりたいという気持ちがより強くなった。
今回のホームステイは、自分にとって大きな成長のきっかけとなる貴重な体験であった。この経験をこれからの学びや生活、将来に生かしていきたいと考えている。

It was winter in New Zealand

It was winter in New Zealand. Of course, I knew that already-seasons are opposite in the Southern and Northern Hemispheres. But when I stepped out of the airport and felt the chill of a foreign winter wind on my cheeks, the shock of that moment was something I'll never forget.

My host family welcomed me warmly and kindly. At first, I couldn't speak English well and had trouble understanding what they were saying. However, they spoke slowly and even used a translation device, which helped a lot. Gradually, our conversations became smoother. One of the most memorable moments was when we cooked together as a family. While making lasagna, we talked a lot about our different food cultures. We also watched movies and TV shows together, and I played games with my host buddy.

I also attended a local school and joined classes with students my age. Everything was completely different from Japanese schools, which I found very interesting. The school I went to was Catholic, so each class started with a prayer, and during assemblies, we sang songs that felt like hymns. The class system was different, too. Instead of staying in one classroom all day, students moved to different rooms for each subject. Every student had their own laptop, which they used to check schedules and study. Paper textbooks were rarely used, and students often used A4 notebooks alongside their computers.

On the weekends, I went to many places with my host family. We went dog sledding at a ski resort and visited a zoo. When we went out to eat, I struggled to read the menu, but thanks to my host family's help, I managed to order food. Although it was only two weeks, I was able to experience the joy of communicating across a language barrier and the excitement of discovering a new culture. This amazing experience made me want to improve my English even more. This homestay was a valuable experience that helped me grow as a person. I want to make the most of what I learned during this time in my future studies, daily life, and even in my future career.
