クライストチャーチで見つけた暮らしの違い

クライストチャーチに行って、まずびっくりしたことは、歩行者信号の青の時間がとても短いことです。信号は押しボタン式で、渡りたいときに自分でボタンを押します。そうするとすぐに青になります。でも、青の時間はとても短くて、ゆっくり歩いていると途中で赤に変わってしまいます。だから、渡るときは少し急がなければなりません。街の雰囲気はゆったりしているのに、信号だけは急かされているようで、不思議な気持ちになりました。

公園を歩いていると、ほとんどの場所にラグビーポールが立っているのに気がつきました。日本ではサッカーのゴールや野球のグラウンドを見ることが多いですが、クライストチャーチではラグビーがとても人気のスポーツだとわかりました。休日には子どもたちや大人が自由にボールを蹴ったり投げたりしています。ラグビーがみんなの生活にとても大切なものだと感じました。

また、街の道路のわきにはたくさんの車が停まっていました。日本では路上駐車はあまりありませんが、クライストチャーチでは道のわきに車を停めるのが当たり前のようでした。車社会ですが、同時に電動キックボードもよく見かけました。特に学生や若い人たちが、学校や仕事に行くのに使っているようでした。電動キックボードは環境にやさしくて、使いやすい乗り物だと思いました。

このようなクライストチャーチの町の様子は、日本とはちがう生活のリズムや文化を感じさせてくれました。歩行者信号の短さやラグビーポールの多さ、路上駐車、電動キックボードなど、どれも毎日の生活に自然にとけこんでいます。こうしたことから、この町の人たちの暮らし方や考え方が少し見えた気がします。 クライストチャーチでは、ゆったりした生活の中に、昔からあるスポーツが大切にされていたり、新しい乗り物が広まっていたりしました。日本とは違うけれど、それぞれの国に合った生活のやり方があるのだと思いました。クライストチャーチでの体験はとても楽しくて、ためになりました。

The Differences in Daily Life I Found in Christchurch

When I went to Christchurch, the first thing that surprised me was how short the green light for pedestrians was. The signals are push-button operated, so you press the button when you want to cross. The light turns green right away. However, the green light only lasts a very short time—if you walk slowly, it will turn red before you finish crossing. So, you have to hurry a little when crossing. Although the city itself has a relaxed atmosphere, the traffic lights somehow make you feel rushed, which was a strange feeling.

When I walked in the parks, I noticed that most places had rugby goalposts. In Japan, you often see soccer goals or baseball fields, but in Christchurch, rugby is a very popular sport. On holidays, children and adults freely kick or throw balls around. I felt that rugby is a very important part of people’s lives there.

Also, I was surprised by how many cars were parked on the streets. In Japan, street parking is rare, but in Christchurch, it seems normal to park cars along the roadside. While cars are common, I also saw many electric scooters. Especially students and young people use them to go to school or work. Electric scooters seem to be an environmentally friendly and convenient way to get around.

These sights in Christchurch made me feel a different rhythm and culture compared to Japan. The short pedestrian lights, rugby posts in the parks, street parking, and electric scooters—all naturally blend into daily life. From these, I felt I could catch a glimpse of the way of life and values of the people there.

In Christchurch, while life is relaxed, traditional sports are still valued, and new transportation methods are spreading. It’s different from Japan, but I think each country has its own way of living that suits it. My experience in Christchurch was very enjoyable and educational.
