クライストチャーチ訪問青少年生活団に加わって

団員全員が無事帰国できて安堵しています。

中学生の皆さんがこれからどのように羽ばたいていくのか楽しみです。日々の生活で学ぶこと、国内で学ぶこと、外国で学ぶことなど多々あります。今回、皆さんは外国に行きいろいろ体験されました。百聞は一見しかずです。新たな体験はきっとプラスになるでしょう。

さて、私の国際交流の原点は、現状から脱したくて英語学習に全精力を注いだ頃にあります。学生時代、英語の勉強はあまり好きではありませんでした。そして、在職途中で米国に留学したことが,　その後の人生を大きく変えました。

　帰国後配属された課の中で国際交流を一人で担当していました。やがて、国際交流課が発足し、人数も増えました。今のようにインターネットの無い時代でしたから、大きな時差のある姉妹都市との電話連絡は大変でした。反面仕事のやりがいもありました。

そしてクライストチャーチ市との縁組みには、提携当時から関わりました。

「クライストチャーチ」の名称はイギリスのオックスフォード大学のカレッジ「クライストチャーチ」に由来しています。クライストチャーチ市民の多くは、英国の伝統を取り入れ「英国外で最も英国的な街」と言われています。

　ところが2011年2月の大地震よりクライストチャーチの多くの場所が液状化し、多くの建造物が崩壊したそうです。

今回訪問してみると、中心街の建物は以前の物と変わり、随分モダンな感じでした。そして商店街は大勢の人で賑わい、以前と変わらないの様子でした。

郊外の住宅地の中には、以前住宅がたくさんのあった所が大きな牧場の様になっているところがあり、規模の大きな所が数カ所ありました。液状化に遭遇したこれらの土地の用途はこれからの様子でした。

一方、被害者が移転した新しい住宅地(住宅団地）にはたくさんの住宅が建っていました。これら住宅団地は大変広く、平屋に限り、建ぺい率の大変厳しい住宅地だそうです。 クライストチャーチ市は、これからも必ず良い方向に進んで行くと思っています。

私の年齢から考えて,ニュージーランド訪問はこれで最後になりそうです。旧友にも久し振りに再会できました。

青少年生活団に随行させていただきましたことに感謝しています。そして、クライストチャーチ市でお目に掛かり、またお世話になりました皆様に心よりお礼申し上げます。

Joined 2025 sister city visit youth life experience team

The origin of my international exchange dates back to when I wanted to escape from my current situation and poured all my energy into learning English. When I was a student, I didn't really like studying English.

Studying abroad in the United States while I was still working changed my life dramatically.

After returning to Japan, I was assigned to a department where I was also in charge of international exchange. Eventually, the International Exchange Department was established and the number of staff increased. This was before the internet like we have today, so it was difficult to make phone calls to sister cities with large time differences. On the other hand, it was also a rewarding job. We have been involved in our relationship with Christchurch city since the partnership began.

The name "Christchurch" comes from the name of the college at Oxford University in England. Many of Christchurch's residents have adopted British traditions and a British lifestyle, and the city is said to be "the most British city outside of Britain."

However, the February 2011 earthquake caused liquefaction in many parts of Christchurch, destroying many houses, and people were forced to relocate as they could not build on the same land. Even when I walked around, the British-style buildings had disappeared, and the beautiful cityscape of the past was no longer there. When I visited in 2019, I didn't have much free time, so I only wandered around the church designed by Japanese architect Kuma, and I was truly surprised by the changes in the city.

Considering my age, this will probably be my last visit to New Zealand, and I was able to reunite with some old friends after a long time. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to accompany the youth life experience group this time.
