ホームステイがくれた宝物

僕は、初めての海外生活がとても不安でした。バディがどんな人なのか、洗濯はしてくれるのか、お風呂は毎日入れるのか．．．些細な心配が募っていました。 なぜなら、ホームステイ前に、初めてバディに送ったメールの返信が無く、なかなか連絡が取れなかったからです。しかし一週間後、待ちに待ったメールがきました。とても嬉しかったです。さらにニュージーランドに行く3日前にはホストマザーともWhatsAppでスムーズにやり取りすることができるようになり、不安な気持ちは一気に解消されました。 飛行機を乗り継ぎ、クライストチャーチ空港で初めてホストファミリーと会った時、家族の皆さんが笑顔で温かく迎えてくださってとても安心しました。

毎日ホストファミリーと話をしていると、正しい文法で話すのが一番良いのは分かっているけど、いざとなったら自分が知っている単語を並べて言葉にしたり、ジェスチャーを交えたりするだけでも、相手は理解してくれました。さらに英単語の意味が分からなくても自分のできる精一杯のことをすれば相手に気持ちは伝わるし、そのやる気が大切だと実感しました。

また、ホストマザーは毎日洗濯をしてくれたり、僕のことを気にかけて日本語で毎日挨拶をしてくれたり、まさにニュージーランドの優しいお母さんでした。ホストファザーは僕のために1週間仕事を休んでいろいろな体験をさせてくれました。学校の送り迎えや、スーパーマーケットの買い物に連れて行ってくれたり、一緒にピザを作ったり、思い出は数え切れません。そしてゴンドラに乗って山の頂上からの素晴らしい景色を見せてくれたり、クライストチャーチやリトルトンの名所に連れて行ってくれたりしました。バディはYesかNo thanksで答えられる質問や「気分はどう？」などといつも気配りしてくれたので安心でした。ホストファミリー全員が本当に優しくて毎日が充実していました。

そして、特に印象に残ったことが2つあります。 1つ目はニュージーランドに着いて最初の週末にテカポ湖へ連れて行ってもらったことです。スノーチュービングやアイススケートを体験しました。夕方になると、まるで絵画のように本物の山とテカポ湖に映る山の両方が視界に広がり、/まさに絶景でした。この景色は一生忘れられません。

2つ目は、この使節団12人全員でさまざまなところを訪れたことです。自分一人では見つけることができないような発見も、誰かと一緒にいることで新たな視点から生みだすことができました。ジェットボート体験では、雨の中、ビショビショになりながらも、みんなでスリルを味わうことができました。

最後に、僕のことを温かく迎え入れ、いろいろなところに連れて行ってくださったホストファミリー、使節団12人、引率者の藤原さん、宇野さん、そしてこの使節団に携わってくださったすべての方々に心から感謝します。たくさんの宝物をありがとうございました。

The Treasures I Gave from Homestay

I was very anxious about my first time living abroad. What kind of person would my buddy be? Would they do my laundry? Would I be able to take a bath every day? Small worries were piling up. The reason was that I hadn't received a reply to the first email I sent to my buddy before my homestay, so it was difficult to get in touch with him. But a week later, I finally received the email I'd been waiting for. I was so happy.

Furthermore, three days before I left for New Zealand, I was able to communicate smoothly with my host mother on WhatsApp, and my anxieties were quickly allayed. After connecting flights, when I met my host family for the first time at Christchurch Airport, they greeted me warmly with smiles, which put me at ease.

Every day, when I talk to my host family, I understand that it's best to speak in correct grammar, but when it comes down to it, I can express myself by stringing together the words I know and using gestures, and they understood me. Even if I don't know the meaning of an English word, if I do my best, my feelings will be conveyed, and I realized that this motivation is important.

Moreover, my host mother would do laundry for me every day, care about me, and greet me in Japanese every day; she was a great mother to me when I was in New Zealand. My host father took a week off work to give me various experiences. He would pick me up and drop me off at school, take me shopping at the supermarket, and we made pizza together, creating countless memories. He also, took me on a gondola ride to enjoy the stunning view from the mountain top and brought me to the attractions in Christchurch and Lyttelton. My buddy was also always considerate, asking questions I could answer with 'Yes' or 'No thanks' and checking in on how I felt, which was reassuring. Everyone in my host family was truly kind, and each day was fulfilling.

And there are two things that particularly impressed me. The first was when I was taken to Lake Tekapo on my first weekend in New Zealand. I experienced snow tubing and ice skating. In the evening, both the real mountains and the reflections of the mountains in Lake Tekapo spread out before my eyes like a painting, and it was truly a breathtaking view. I will never forget this scenery for the rest of my life.

The second point is that all twelve members of this delegation visited various places together. There were discoveries that I would not have been able to make on my own, but being with others allowed us to create new perspectives. During the jet boat experience, even though we got soaked in the rain, we were all able to enjoy the thrill together.

Finally, I would like to sincerely thank my host family who warmly welcomed me, the twelve members of the delegation, the leaders Mr. Fujiwara and Mr. Uno, and everyone else who was involved in this delegation. Thank you for so many treasures!!!
