初めての海外留学

　今回のニュージーランド・クライストチャーチでの16日間の留学は、僕にとって非常に貴重な体験となった。到着して空港を出た瞬間、まず驚いたのは街全体の自然の豊かさだった。冬の空の下に広がる広大な公園と木々、建物や人々、日本でみられる景色とは大きく異なり、どこか開放感のある雰囲気だった。

ホームステイ先での生活は忘れがたい経験だった。はじめは文化や言語の違いに戸惑うこともあった。しかし、ホストファミリーの方々はみな親切で、優しく迎えてくれた。いつでも「今日はどうだった？」と話しかけてくれたおかげで、出来事を英語で話すという習慣が自然と身についた。特に夕飯での会話は、英語力を鍛えるだけではなく、家族の温もりを感じる大切な時間だった。

団員と訪問した施設やホストファミリーと訪れた観光地などでは、ニュージーランドの文化や自然をよく知ることができた。ウィローバンク野生動物保護区では、その土地の動物たちの自然なままの生活を見ることができ、また、Waka体験ではマオリの伝統文化を学ぶことができた。どの施設も日本とは異なる環境だったので、異国での暮らしの面白さと難しさを改めて感じた。

通学体験で行ったカシミア高校は、日本と比べてまったく違った。まず、多くの異なる国の人たちが通っていたことに驚いた。校内を歩いていて聞こえてくる言葉は英語だけとは限らず、中には日本語も。まさに「多文化社会」だった。また、高校といっても3学年だけではなく多くの幅広い年齢層で、日本でいう小学生もこの学校に通っており、生徒数も2000人を超えていた。日本ではこのような学校は中々見られないため、自分の視野がとても広がった。

この留学で英語力向上に重要なことは、とにかく下手な文法だとしても話してみることだと気づいた。これは、言語だけじゃなくすべてのことに言えることだ。恥ずかしさや失敗の恐れなどで「やらない」はもったいない。留学中だれもが、僕の英語を聞き取ろうとしてくれた。人は自分が思っているより優しく、あたたかい。だから僕は今後の人生で、迷うことがあるならば「やってみる」ことを大切にしたい。

My First Study Abroad Experience

My 16-day study abroad program in Christchurch, New Zealand, was an incredibly valuable experience for me. The moment I stepped out of the airport, I was struck by the abundance of nature throughout the city. The vast parks and trees stretching out under the winter sky, the buildings and people—it was a completely different landscape from what I was used to in Japan, with a sense of openness that was very different from home.

Living with a host family was an unforgettable experience. At first, I was confused by the cultural and language differences. However, the host family was very kind and welcoming. They always asked me, “How was your day?” which helped me naturally develop the habit of speaking English about my experiences. Especially during dinner conversations, it was not only a chance to improve my English skills but also a precious time to feel the warmth of the family.

Visiting facilities with fellow participants and tourist spots with host families allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of New Zealand's culture and nature. At Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, I observed the natural lives of local animals, and through the Waka experience, I learned about Maori traditional culture. Each facility offered an environment vastly different from Japan, reinforcing my awareness of the joys and challenges of living abroad.

The school experience at Cashmere High School was completely different from Japan. First, I was surprised to see that many people from different countries attended the school. The languages I heard while walking around the school grounds were not limited to English; some were even Japanese. It was truly a “multicultural society.” Additionally, although it was a high school, it had a wide range of age groups, including elementary school students in Japan, and the number of students exceeded 2,000. Such schools are rare in Japan, so my horizons were greatly broadened.

　During this study abroad experience, I realized that the most important thing for improving English skills is to simply speak, even if the grammar is imperfect. This applies not only to language but to everything in life. It’s a shame to refrain from trying something out of fear of embarrassment or failure. During my time abroad, everyone made an effort to understand my English. People are kinder and more compassionate than one might think. Therefore, in the future, whenever I face a dilemma, I want to prioritize taking action and giving it a try.
