一生に一度の体験から学んだこと

私はニュージーランドに行くまで、私はどれぐらい自分の気持ちや考えを相手に伝えられるのだろうか？と疑問に思っていました。ネイティブの英語を聞き取れるのか、英語に囲まれて生活するというのはどんな感覚なのだろう。単語や文法を勉強し、問題を解いたり喋ってみることはあったけど、実際に海外で使う、自分の考えを伝えることは初めてでした。それに初めての海外、初めてのホームステイ、私にとって新しい事ばかりのところで、どれだけ輝くことができるのか。この体験は自分を試せるいいチャンスだと考えました。この人生で一度きりのチャンスを無駄にせず、自分に自信をつけたいと思いました。

そして、ついにクライストチャーチに到着した時、私はとても緊張していました。空港のゲートを出て自分のホストファミリーを見つけた時、お礼の言葉を絶対に伝えようと心に決めていました。「Thank you for having me!」勇気を出して言ってみると、こちらこそ！とすごく喜んでくれました。その後も毎日積極的にたくさんお話しすると、会話も盛り上がってすごく楽しかったし、自分の英語が相手にちゃんと伝わっていることが嬉しかったです。「英語上手だね！」と褒めてくださり、自分の英語力に自信をつけることができ、もっとたくさん会話して、上達させたいと思いました。

そして、この生活体験団の目的の一つに異文化交流がありました。実際に一緒に生活してみる中で、学校生活での違いや食文化の違いなどを知り、理解することでお互いの文化を尊重することができました。ニュージーランドの方達も日本の文化を知ろうとしてくれて、「日本ではどうなの？」と聞いてくれることが多く、嬉しかったです。異文化交流をすれば、自分の文化とは違うところがたくさん見えてくるけれど、私はそれ以上に共通点を知ることができました。例えば、同じ映画を見て感動したり一緒にゲームをして楽しくて笑ったり、同じものを食べて美味しいと感じたり。異文化だけれど同じところもたくさんあって、私たちの心は繋がっているのだと感じました。その繋がりを大切にし、これからも色んな文化について学びたいと思いました。

Reflections on a Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

Before going to New Zealand, I often wondered how well I would be able to express my thoughts and feelings to others. Would I be able to understand native English speakers? What would it feel like to live surrounded by English every day? I had studied vocabulary and grammar, solved exercises, and practiced speaking, but this would be my first time actually using English overseas to share my own ideas．

It was also my first time going abroad, my first homestay, and I would be in a place filled with entirely new experiences. I wondered how much I could shine in such an environment. I saw this trip as a great opportunity to test myself. I didn’t want to waste this once-in-a-lifetime chance—I wanted to come back with more confidence in myself.

When I finally arrived in Christchurch, I was very nervous. As I stepped out of the airport gate and spotted my host family, I had already decided that I would make sure to thank them. I gathered my courage and said, “Thank you for having me!” They smiled and replied warmly, “We’re glad to have you!” From then on, I made an effort to talk with them a lot every day. The conversations became lively and fun, and I was happy to see that my English was really getting across. When they told me, “Your English is great!” it gave me confidence, and I wanted to speak even more and improve further.

One of the purposes of this cultural exchange program was to experience life in another culture. By actually living together, I was able to learn about and understand differences in school life, eating habits, and more. This helped us respect each other’s cultures. I was also happy that the people in New Zealand showed interest in Japanese culture and often asked me, “How is it in Japan?” Through cultural exchange, I discovered many differences between our cultures—but I also found just as many similarities. For example, watching the same movie and feeling moved, playing games together and laughing or eating the same food and thinking it was delicious. Even though our cultures are different, there are so many things we share, and I felt that our hearts were connected. I want to cherish those connections and continue learning about different cultures in the future.
