ニュージーランドでの生活を体験して

私が海外に行ったのは、今回が初めてでした。ホストファミリー会うまで全然実感がわかず、ただ楽しみな気持ちでいっぱいでした。そして、ホストファミリーに会い、笑顔で優しく出迎えてくれましたが、最初はほとんどを聞き取ることができませんでした。2週間もこれから一緒に過ごすのに、こんなに聞き取れなくて大丈夫なのかと心配でしかたがなかったです。でも、はじめは翻訳機を使ってくれたり、ゆっくり話したりしてくれて、次第に私の不安は無くなっていきました。

私が今回の経験から学んだことは二つあります。

　一つ目は、相手に伝える気持ちの大切さです。ホストファミリーも学校の先生も友達も、私の言葉をよく聞いて理解してくれます。そして、私が理解できなくても他の単語を使ったり、ジェスチャーを使ったりして説明をしてくれます。外国の人と話す際に一番必要なものは、英語力でもコミュニケーション能力でもなく相手に伝える気持ちだということを学びました。

二つ目は、違う場所に住み、違う言語を話していても、私たちと同じような感情があるということです。誰かと会うのはわくわくする、たくさん話せると嬉しい、友達と会うと楽しい、別れるのはさみしいなど、地球の反対側に住んでいて言語や文化が違っていても同じような感情があるということに気づかされました。

寝る時間が早いことや学校の違いなどから驚くこともありましたが、日本とニュージーランドは似ているところも違うところもあり、とても楽しかったです。また、多くの人に日本語であいさつをされたり、英語のこの文って日本語でなんていうの？と聞かれたりしました。さらに、ニュージーランドにたくさんの日本人が住んでいるのも、お互いの国をよく知りたいという思いがあったからだと思います。 本当に今回のような貴重な経験をさせていただき、ありがとうございました。

Life Experience in New Zealand

This was my first abroad. Until I met my host family, I couldn't believe it was real and was just excited. When I met my host family, they welcomed me with smiles and kindness. However, at first, I couldn't understand most of what they were saying. For the first two weeks, I was worried that I might not be able to communicate with them. However, they used translation devices at first and spoke to me slowly. As a result, my anxiety gradually disappeared. There are two things I learned from this experience. 

The first is the importance of the desire to communicate with others. My host family, teachers, and friends all listened to my words seriously and tried to understand me. Even when I couldn’t understand, they explained using different words or gestures. What I learned is that the most important thing is not English ability or communication skills, but the desire to convey your feelings to others. 

The second is that even if we live in different places and speak different languages, we share similar emotions. Meeting someone is exciting, being able to talk a lot is enjoyable, meeting friends is fun, and saying goodbye is sad. I realized that even if we live on opposite sides of the globe and have different languages and cultures, we share similar emotions.

There were some surprises, such as the early bedtime and differences in the school system, but there were both similarities and differences between Japan and New Zealand, and it was a lot of fun. Additionally, many people greeted me in Japanese, and I was happy when someone asked me, ‘How do you say this English sentence in Japanese?’ I think the reason so many Japanese people live in New Zealand is because there is a mutual desire to learn more about each other's countries.　I am deeply grateful for this valuable experience.
